Why wait?

posted in Fashion & Style |

Since the days of Tom Ford, Gucci has had something of a hard edge to it. Fall’s bags were no different with their icy metal corners and glossed finishes.

The Sabrina bag, for Cruise 08, is the opposite of all that. Dare I say, if I didn’t know it, I would never even peg this as Gucci. The corners are rounded, the shiniest hardware belongs to the 2 skinny zippers on the outer pockets. In a feminine twist, all the edges have a tiny frilly ruffle. No, ruffles are hardly new, but unlike the large cascading cha-cha ruffles done by, say, YSL, these are very subdued, and almost little girly.
That all said, the bag is a bit less fresh than I’d expect. The shape is one seen before from the likes of Prada to Biasia. And the ruffle may seem new and interesting at the $1000+ level, but not so much at the middle range.
As an example, the Magnolia from Treesje.

While definitely not the same bag, you do get the same ruffled edge, and the front zipper look…even the color is extremely similar. The Treesje is heavier looking, and the braided handle is a bit of overkill…it would never be mistaken for a bag as pricey as the Gucci, but it is a very nice looking bag, at 1/4 the price.
Another difference, especially for the impatient, you have to wait until some time between January and March to spend $1890 for the Sabrina from Gucci while you can have the Treesje Magnolia for $470 as soon as it can be shipped from Privileged.
